About Us

The desire to open a gallery began many years ago when I visited my sister in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We had taken a trip north to Taos and on the way back stopped at the gallery in the home of one of her acquaintances. It may have been in Truchas. I was very impressed. There were beautiful works there and the proprietor was very keen and enthusiastic. I thought that someday I''d like to open a gallery to encourage such creativity. I put that little dream in the back of my head. In the meantime, I taught high school English and Dramatic Arts, coached, traveled, and raised a family of three children with my wife Jane. My interest in promoting the arts continued outside of the school setting with a strong volunteer involvement in Market Hall Performing Arts Centre in downtown Peterborough.

A number of factors came together for me in 2008. The first was the decision to finally do some renovations on the front room of our home. I had wanted to remove some paneling that I had been trying to camouflage for years. Secondly, I was now retired and busy, but less so. And finally, my son, the oil painter, was hoping to make a living as an artist and was ready to be promoted by an admirer. Thus, the former dining room was renovated as a gallery.

Deacon House got its name from William Deacon who built the original part of the house sometime in the 1860''s using a collection of wood from his mill. Since the house still stands, I thought that he should get some recognition and that his name should continue here. Now Deacon House Gallery will feature Lucas Werger, other visual artists and artisans. My intention is that the gallery will offer works of art with both beauty and insight that will please and inspire the beholder.
